The short answer
Start free. Claude's free tier uses the same models as Pro and is genuinely usable for everyday work. Most people can answer "is Claude for me?" without paying anything.
Upgrade when you start hitting the usage ceiling mid-task, or when you want Projects with proper document knowledge, or Cowork. Those are the three real gains.

What you actually get for free
More than the word "free" suggests. The free tier is not a crippled demo — it runs the same underlying models as the paid plans. The answers you get are the answers a Pro subscriber gets.
You can upload documents and ask questions about them, create and publish artifacts, and set up to five Projects. For someone using Claude a few times a day, this is a complete product.
What you do not get is much room. The free allowance is small enough that a single involved session can exhaust it, and there is no Cowork or Claude Code.
What Pro actually adds
Room to work
The main thing. Pro's allowance is high enough that ordinary use rarely touches it, which changes how you work — you stop rationing questions and start using it as a default tool.
Projects that actually know your documents
Free Projects hold context. Paid Projects add retrieval, so you can load far more material than fits in a conversation and Claude pulls the relevant parts as needed. If you have a body of reference material you keep re-explaining, this is the feature that pays for itself.
Cowork and Claude Code
Both are Pro-and-above. Cowork runs multi-step tasks against your actual files and connected apps; Claude Code does the same in a terminal. If either sounds useful, that alone is the upgrade reason.
When to upgrade
One signal, and it is unambiguous: you hit the limit in the middle of something and it annoys you.
Not "I hit the limit once." Not "I might use it more later." The moment where you were mid-task, got stopped, and the interruption cost you real time — that is worth $20 a month. Before that point, it is not.
Do not upgrade because a comparison page told you to. Including this one. Use the free tier until it gets in your way. If it never does, you have saved $240 a year.
Verdict
Free is the right starting point for everyone, and the right permanent home for casual users. It is the same Claude, just less of it.
Pro is worth it the moment Claude becomes part of how you work rather than something you try occasionally — and the usage ceiling will tell you when that happened more reliably than you will.
